Nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is an infection of the toenails and fingernails. It is mostly caused by dermatophytes, while in rare cases yeasts can also be responsible.
A damaged cuticle, which normally provides natural protection against fungi and bacteria, is a common entry point. Toenails are also affected significantly more often than fingernails.
Nail fungus symptoms and risk factors
A fungal infection does not only result in brittle nails. The nail loses its shine, and small hollow spaces form. As the disease progresses, it discolors dirty yellow, and at the same time becomes thicker and crumbly. The change in the nail is the result of the decomposition of keratin - the preferred nutrient for dermatophytes. In the worst case, the nail can cause pain and fall out, while the fungus spreads to adjacent nails.
Risk factors for an infection include circulatory disorders, for example caused by arteriosclerosis or diabetes, or immune diseases. We often pick up these unwanted guests in places like swimming pools, changing rooms and saunas: Here, there is a warm, humid climate where we mostly walk barefoot. If only brittle nails are observed, a nutrient deficiency could also be the cause. It should be clarified early on whether a fungal infection may be present.
Treating nail fungus requires patience
Nail fungus should be diagnosed and treated by a doctor as early as possible, as it is very persistent if it progresses.
In early stages, the infection can be treated with a polish containing an antifungal agent - a fungicidal ingredient. In advanced stages, tablets are necessary. In addition, an ointment is prescribed, which dissolves the upper nail layers and exposes hollow spaces containing fungal spores. It can take several months for the nails to heal - a lot of patience is required.
Mosadal care products prevent the formation of new attack surfaces for the fungus. They can thus support healing and curb the spread of the fungus.
Home remedies for nail fungus - what helps?
With intensive and supportive care, feet not only feel good, but are also more resistant to pathogens. With Mosadal-Fluid and Mosadal-Creme, cuticles and even stubborn calluses can be effectively and gently removed.
For this, the affected areas are moistened with the fluid and, after an appropriate exposure time, removed with a nail brush or a callus scraper. Possible attack surfaces for fungi are thus effectively eliminated. Finally, the Mosadal cream has a very soothing effect.
Mosadal foot baths are particularly pleasant in the evening before going to bed. With natural essential oils, they prevent foot sweat and thus simultaneously protect the toes from fungal infection.
Various oils, such as tea tree oil, play another supportive role in the care of fingernails and toenails. In addition, Mosadal has developed an intensely nourishing nail care oil with high-quality organic argan oil. This prevents brittle nails and the regeneration of cuticles - with a regenerating effect. Good nail care is therefore half the battle when it comes to prevention.
Diabetics in particular should take good care of their feet, as this is often where the first tissue changes become noticeable. In addition, everyone can also adhere to simple rules: Change shoes and socks frequently and wash affected laundry at at least 60°C if possible to kill spores.
