Urea Cream - Product Information
Once you take a closer look at skin care and moisturizing creams, you will sooner or later come across the term "urea". This substance is now contained in many creams that promise optimal skin hydration and an overall better skin appearance. But what is urea and how can you best utilize the substance in your daily skin care routine?
What is urea?
"Urea" is now a familiar term to many people - but what exactly is urea?
Urea is the Latin term for a substance that is actually excreted in the urine as an end product of protein metabolism. However, the nitrogen compounds that make up urea are no longer obtained from urine: while horse urine was used for the development of urea products until 1828, the substance is subsequently produced synthetically. In this way, urea can be obtained considerably more easily and, above all, more cheaply.
How does dry skin develop?
To understand how urea works as an ingredient in moisturizing creams, you must first understand how dry skin develops.
The sweat and sebaceous glands of our skin constantly produce a fat-water mixture that keeps the skin supple. However, if the sebaceous glands no longer release enough fat, or if the released fat is removed by external influences, the skin is not sufficiently moisturized and consequently becomes dry and brittle.
The causes of dry skin are diverse: In addition to external influences such as cold weather or dry air, poor eating habits, side effects of medication, or diseases can also cause dry skin or at least promote its development. Dry skin manifests itself through a brittle skin feeling, a cracked skin appearance and flaking.
Causes of dry skin under the magnifying glass
Dry skin can be promoted by both internal and external factors. Internal factors include age, as well as internal diseases such as diabetes or skin diseases such as psoriasis. Stress, being underweight and the functioning of the immune system can also promote dry skin – as can a genetic predisposition or hormone balance.
However, external influences also play an equally important role in the search for causes of dry skin. Especially people in nursing professions or in the cleaning industry, who are particularly often exposed to harsh cleaning agents, disinfectants or degreasing soaps, usually suffer from dry skin. UV radiation and humidity also promote dry skin, as do bacteria, fungi or other microorganisms or certain medications and hormonal contraceptives. An unhealthy lifestyle with alcohol and nicotine consumption and/or malnutrition can also be responsible for the development of dry skin.
How does urea care work?
The outer layer of skin regulates so-called corneocytes, which protect the skin from harmful influences and regulate the skin's moisture content through the Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF). This Natural Moisturizing Factor is a mixture of substances that bind water molecules. Urea, as a natural component of the skin, can make up to seven percent of this mixture - however, this proportion decreases with age.
Difference between Urea and other moisturizing creams
Other moisturizing creams, which may include lanolin, polymers, silicones or oils such as jojoba oil or sunflower oil, cover the skin layer and thus only work temporarily. The additional urea care for the skin helps to bind and store moisture. Urea penetrates the outer skin layer and absorbs and stores water here, allowing the skin to retain moisture for longer.
Urea concentration is usually between 5 and 25 percent
Skin care products with urea as an ingredient are generally available in various concentrations. The best basis for care with urea products is advice from a dermatologist or professional beautician. As a rule, a concentration of five percent urea in the care product is sufficient for dry skin. For problematic skin, the concentration can be increased to up to 15 percent urea. Chronic skin diseases can also be treated with urea in tablet form.
Application of Urea
For chronic skin conditions, the symptoms can be alleviated by urea in tablet form. Otherwise, dry skin can also be treated with urea creams, which have moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effects and facilitate the desquamation of the skin. Since urea is a natural substance that is also already present in the skin, the effect of skin care with urea creams sets in particularly quickly. The drier the skin, the better the effect of urea. However, if the care is discontinued, the skin's appearance may worsen again. For this reason, urea creams are also often used for long-term care.
Urea Cream and Calluses
Highly concentrated urea creams with a concentration of 40 percent have antimicrobial and anti-itch properties. In this way, urea can be used not only to moisturize dry skin, but also to treat nail fungus. Since urea can also break down callus cells, it is also frequently used in callus creams. However, it should be noted that urea creams cannot revive the skin - instead, urea helps to remove dead skin and ensures that the skin underneath remains moist and elastic.
Tips and tricks for dry skin
Those who suffer from dry skin can do even more for the health of their largest sensory organ in addition to regular care with urea products. First and foremost, this includes a particularly careful approach to the skin: In addition to cleansing the skin with mild cleansers and refraining from using alcohol-based facial toners, it also includes care with a water-free and fatty cream. Medical oil baths and the use of pH-neutral washing lotions can also help to improve dry skin.
In addition to care with the right preparations, you should also pay attention to a few things when dealing with your own skin. To protect the skin, it is advisable, for example, not to rub the skin dry after washing, but to gently pat it dry instead. Refraining from using sponges or bath gloves also contributes to healthy skin, as does loose clothing that does not chafe, and the correct water temperature when bathing: Anyone who suffers from dry skin should, if possible, only bathe or shower lukewarmly and then definitely apply cream to optimally care for the skin.
